Botox® for Jaw Tension and TMJ in the Harrisburg Area
Reviewed by Dr. Susan Korch, DMD, MS
Botox® can relieve jaw tension from clenching and grinding by relaxing the overworked muscles that drive these behaviors. At Korch Orthodontics, it is offered to adult patients, and every treatment is performed personally by Dr. Susan Korch, who is certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Appointments take under 30 minutes with little or no downtime.
Most people associate Botox® with cosmetic treatment alone. In a dental practice, its more useful application is usually therapeutic.
If you wake with a sore jaw, if your dentist has pointed out worn or flattened teeth, or if you catch yourself clenching during the working day, the cause is a muscle doing far more work than it should. Botox® reduces the force with which that muscle can contract, and the relief is often noticeable within a week or two.
This treatment is for adults only.
Why an Orthodontist Offers This
Clenching and grinding are not just uncomfortable. They actively work against orthodontic treatment.
The forces a clenching patient generates are considerably greater than the light, continuous forces used to move teeth deliberately. That competition matters in three ways:
- During treatment, heavy clenching can slow progress and put unwanted load on teeth being moved.
- After treatment, it is one of the reasons a corrected bite drifts, alongside inconsistent retainer wear.
- Independently of orthodontics, it wears enamel, and enamel does not grow back.
Managing the muscle is therefore part of protecting the result, which is precisely why this sits in an orthodontic practice rather than being a cosmetic add-on.
What It Treats
Therapeutic
- Clenching and grinding (bruxism). Relaxing the masseter, the main closing muscle of the jaw, reduces the force available for clenching.
- Jaw tension and TMJ discomfort. Where muscle overactivity is driving the discomfort, reducing it usually reduces the symptom.
- Gummy smile. Where a lip lifts unusually high, treating the muscle that raises it can produce a more balanced smile without any dental work.
Esthetic
- Fine lines. Crow’s feet, frown lines between the brows, forehead lines, and lip lines.
- Jawline and neck. Relaxing overactive masseter muscles can slim a heavy lower face over time, and treating the platysmal bands of the neck can further refine the jawline.
Dr. Korch's Training
Every treatment is planned and performed personally by Dr. Korch. Nothing is delegated.
She is certified by the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, the organization that trains dental professionals in therapeutic and esthetic injectable technique. Her clinical background is directly relevant rather than incidental: an orthodontist spends a career studying the muscles of the jaw and face, how they generate force, and how that force moves teeth. The masseter is a muscle she already understands in detail.
Her approach is deliberately conservative. The aim is relief and balance, not an obviously treated face.
What Happens at the Appointment
A consultation first. We review your medical history and current medications, discuss what you want to change, and explain what is realistic. If Botox® is not the right answer, we will say so.
The treatment takes under 30 minutes. A series of small injections into the specific muscles identified in your plan.
There is little or no downtime. Most patients return to normal activity the same day. We ask you to avoid strenuous exercise, heat, and facial treatments until the following day.
Results build gradually over the days following treatment, and the effect is temporary. Most patients find it lasts around three to four months, and treatment of the jaw muscles often lasts longer than that because those muscles are larger and the doses are correspondingly higher. We will tell you what to expect from your treatment and when to come back.
We can often coordinate treatment with an existing orthodontic appointment, so it does not require a separate trip. For patients traveling in from Harrisburg or further, that matters.
More Than One Formula
Several neuromodulators are available, including Botox®, Xeomin®, and Daxxify®. All relax targeted muscles; they differ in formulation and in how long the effect lasts.
Dr. Korch will recommend which suits your goals. This is a clinical judgment rather than a preference, and it is worth asking any provider whether they offer a choice at all.
Ask About It at Your Next Visit
If jaw tension or clenching is affecting you, bring it up. A consultation costs nothing and will tell you whether this is the right approach.

Botox FAQs
Botox can elevate your smile, enhance facial balance, and improve comfort, especially when thoughtfully integrated with orthodontic care. These FAQs address common questions and considerations, helping you understand what to expect and feel confident in your care.
Will I still look natural?
That is the intent, and it is mostly a question of dose and placement rather than of the product. A conservative approach produces movement that looks like yours. If your concern is looking frozen, say so at the consultation, because we can plan for a lighter result.
Can Botox® stop me grinding my teeth at night?
It can substantially reduce it. Relaxing the jaw muscles lowers the force available for grinding, which reduces both the discomfort and the wear on your teeth. It manages the muscle rather than the underlying habit, so it is often used alongside a night guard, which we can provide.
How long does Botox® last?
Around three to four months for most patients, and often longer when the jaw muscles are treated, since those muscles are larger and take a higher dose. The effect fades gradually rather than stopping, so you will notice it returning well before it is gone.
Can it be done at the same visit as my orthodontic appointment?
Usually, yes. Tell us in advance so enough time is set aside.
What should I avoid afterwards?
Strenuous exercise, heat such as saunas or hot yoga, and facial treatments, all until the next day. Otherwise there are no restrictions.
